Brazilian frozen pork moves in volume to Asia, Latin America and parts of Africa, and the buying process differs from poultry and beef in ways that catch new importers out. Pork is excluded from Halal markets entirely, the cut vocabulary is less standardised across regions than it is for beef, and destination eligibility is tightly establishment-specific. This guide covers what to specify, how to verify, and what to expect operationally.
Start with the exclusion, because it decides your market map
Pork is not Halal and is not supplied under Halal terms. That removes a large part of the Middle East and North Africa from your destination list before you start, and it means any supplier offering Halal pork is not credible.
It also has a practical consequence inside the supply chain. Plants handling pork and plants handling Halal species are separated, and a supplier's Halal capability in poultry or beef tells you nothing about its pork capability. Verify pork supply on its own terms rather than assuming it transfers.
The cuts, and why nomenclature causes disputes
The frozen pork cuts that move in export volume include belly, shoulder and shoulder roast, loin and fillet, ribs, hocks, and various joints. Retail and foodservice naming for these varies considerably between countries, and the same English word can describe different anatomical cuts in different markets.
The fix is unglamorous and effective: agree a cut diagram with the supplying plant before contracting. Alongside it, specify bone-in or boneless, skin-on or skinless, the fat trim tolerance, the thickness or weight range, and whether you want slab or portioned format. A cut diagram plus those five parameters removes almost all specification disputes.
Classification
Frozen swine meat sits under HS heading 0203. Within it, the subheadings that matter in practice are 0203.22 for hams, shoulders and cuts thereof, bone in, and 0203.29 for other frozen cuts. The full national tariff code is longer and varies by country, and the final classification is confirmed with your destination customs broker. Getting this wrong is a duty dispute rather than a delay, and it is easier to resolve before the invoice is issued than after arrival.
Verifying the establishment for pork
As with other species, export-eligible Brazilian plants operate under the Servico de Inspecao Federal, administered by the Ministerio da Agricultura e Pecuaria, and carry an SIF number. The official veterinary health certificate is issued under that authority.
Two checks matter specifically for pork. First, confirm the establishment is approved for pork, not merely approved. Second, confirm it is approved for your destination, because approvals are granted establishment by establishment and destination by destination, and they are added and suspended over time. Our guide to verifying a Brazilian meat exporter sets out how the main importing authorities publish their approved establishment lists.
Destination eligibility across Asia and Latin America
The principal frozen pork destinations for Brazilian product include China and Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina, and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
For China, establishments must be registered with the General Administration of Customs of China under Decree 280, which replaced Decree 248 on 1 June 2026, and registration is verifiable in the GACC register of registered overseas producers. Chinese buyers routinely request registration details before quoting. For the other destinations, the importing authority maintains its own approval arrangements, and the same principle applies: check at the time of the order rather than relying on a previous shipment.
Pork trade is also sensitive to animal health events. Suspensions can be imposed at short notice, sometimes regionalised and sometimes national depending on the bilateral agreement. Build contractual flexibility for it.
Packing and container loading
Frozen pork is commonly supplied in export master cartons, in vacuum-sealed formats for higher-value cuts, and in bulk industrial packs for processors. Retail-ready and private-label packing is available in many cases, usually with a minimum of one full container load per SKU.
Loading follows the same logic as other frozen protein. Carton dimensions and whether the load is palletised or floor-loaded change the net tonnage that fits a 40ft high-cube reefer, which changes your cost per tonne even when the price per tonne is unchanged. Confirm the loading configuration for your order rather than assuming a standard figure, and remember that a reefer holds temperature, it does not pull down a warm load, so pre-cooling and pulp temperature at stuffing matter.
The document set
A frozen pork shipment travels with the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, the official veterinary health certificate issued under the exporting country's competent authority, and a certificate of origin where the destination or a preferential arrangement requires one. No Halal certificate is issued, since pork is not Halal.
Agree the exact list and who issues each document before production starts. A container held at destination for a missing or incorrectly worded certificate accrues demurrage while it waits, and on a reefer that is more expensive than on a dry box.
A specification checklist for pork
- Cut confirmed against an agreed diagram, not by name alone
- Bone-in or boneless, skin-on or skinless
- Fat trim tolerance stated
- Thickness or weight range and tolerance
- Slab or portioned format, and packing method
- Carton net weight and pallet requirement
- Establishment approved for pork and for your destination
- HS subheading agreed with your broker
- Incoterm and named port
- Document list and issuing party agreed in writing
Product specification, plant assignment, certification scope and destination eligibility are confirmed for each order.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Brazilian pork Halal?
- No. Pork is not Halal and is not supplied under Halal terms. Any offer of Halal pork should be treated as not credible. A supplier's Halal capability in poultry or beef does not transfer to pork, and plants handling pork are separated from those handling Halal species.
- What HS code applies to frozen pork?
- Frozen swine meat sits under HS heading 0203. In practice the relevant subheadings are 0203.22 for hams, shoulders and cuts thereof with bone in, and 0203.29 for other frozen cuts. The full national tariff code is longer and varies by country, so confirm the final classification with your destination customs broker.
- Why do pork cut names cause disputes?
- Retail and foodservice naming varies considerably between countries, and the same English term can describe different anatomical cuts in different markets. Agree a cut diagram with the supplying plant before contracting, alongside bone-in or boneless, skin condition, fat trim tolerance and weight range.
- Which markets import Brazilian frozen pork?
- The principal destinations include China and Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina, and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. Eligibility is granted establishment by establishment and destination by destination, so confirm it for the specific plant supplying your order.
- Do I need GACC registration to ship pork to China?
- The supplying establishment must be registered with the General Administration of Customs of China under Decree 280, which replaced Decree 248 on 1 June 2026, and that registration is verifiable in the GACC register of registered overseas producers. Chinese buyers commonly request registration details before quoting.
- What documents travel with a frozen pork shipment?
- The commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, the official veterinary health certificate issued under the exporting country's competent authority, and a certificate of origin where the destination or a preferential arrangement requires one. No Halal certificate is issued.
- What is the minimum order for frozen pork?
- Full container load ordering is the norm, typically one 40ft high-cube reefer. Private-label and retail-ready packing usually carries a minimum of one full container load per SKU. The exact minimum is confirmed per order and destination.
